St Albans Rehearsal Orchestra
St Albans Rehearsal Orchestra (SARO) was founded by Ron Bell in 2002. A warm and friendly group, it provides an opportunity for people who are free during the daytime to enjoy music-making together in a relaxed and light-hearted environment.
The orchestra is directed by a professional conductor, Matthew Hardy, and rehearses on Wednesday mornings during school term times at Mid Herts Centre for Music & Arts, Hatfield.
We have around fifty members who have a wide age range and a variety of musical backgrounds. Some are music teachers who come along to play their second or third instruments; some of the older players are renewing their acquaintance with an instrument that has spent many years gathering dust in the loft; others have taken up their instrument for the first time only recently, perhaps when they retired.
SARO does not give formal concerts, though there is an informal play-through at the end of each term, usually involving a guest concerto soloist. Additionally, the orchestra regularly gives interactive outreach concerts in local primary schools, in which children get to hear the orchestra up close and learn about the instruments.
We currently have vacancies for the following instruments:
Trombone and tuba
Our trumpet and wind sections are currently fully subscribed but our sister organisation SARO Winds is always happy to accommodate new wind and brass players.
From time to time we host open rehearsals, where anyone is welcome to join in. Please get in touch using the form below if you are interested in coming to play.
