St Albans Rehearsal Orchestra

About SARO: Welcome

St Albans Rehearsal Orchestra (SARO) was founded by Ron Bell in 2002. A warm and friendly group, it provides an opportunity for people who are free during the daytime to enjoy music-making together in a relaxed and light-hearted environment.

The orchestra is directed by a professional conductor, Matthew Hardy, and rehearses on Wednesday mornings during school term times at Mid Herts Centre for Music & Arts, Hatfield.

We have around fifty members who have a wide age range and a variety of musical backgrounds. Some are music teachers who come along to play their second or third instruments; some of the older players are renewing their acquaintance with an instrument that has spent many years gathering dust in the loft; others have taken up their instrument for the first time only recently, perhaps when they retired.

SARO does not give formal concerts, though there is an informal play-through at the end of each term, usually involving a guest concerto soloist. Additionally, the orchestra regularly gives interactive outreach concerts in local primary schools, in which children get to hear the orchestra up close and learn about the instruments.
