Repertoire : Each term we work on about four or five different pieces. These are mostly excerpts from the classics with a sprinkling of lighter music. For instance, recent selections have included movements from Haydn’s Clock Symphony, Grieg’s Pier Gynt Suite No 1 and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance. We have also worked on Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, William Walton's Crown Imperial, the Annan Polka by Johann Strauss and Kurt Weill's Mack the Knife from the Threepenny Opera. The aim is to play a wide range of music spanning different styles and centuries.

SARO applied to Making Music (the organisation which looks after amateur music groups) to be included in its annual Adopt-a-Composer Scheme. We were one of the six lucky groups, from amongst many applications, to be chosen to have a young composer work with them for a year. Paul Fretwell has been commissioned by Making Music to compose a piece for us which we can use in our school workshops; it will be a piece for orchestra and include opportunities for the children to join in as well. The project is funded by the Performing Rights Society.
